Linking Development Managers with global best practice

Overview

DevelopmentWA is the Western Australia State Government’s central land and development agency – creating places for people to live, work, visit and do business.  Projects include:

  • Australian Marine Complex, a nationally significant marine, defence and shipbuilding precinct.
  • Kalgoorlie-Boulder, a major residential and industrial land investment program.
  • Perth City Link, reconnecting the Perth CBD with Northbridge for the first time in over a century.

To prepare for a planned refresh of its appraoch to project management, DevelopmentWA partnered with Millpond to broaden understanding of global best practices in project management – strengthening consistency, confidence and delivery outcomes across teams.

The engagement brought together 66 Development Managers with mixed levels of experience through a blend of learning options, including:

  • Project Management Fundamentals,
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) and,
  • PMI Construction Professional (PMI‑CP)™.

The objective was to benchmark current approaches, explore global best practice and frameworks, and enable participants to pursue globally recognised certification.

Approach

The team at Millpond worked with Development WA’s Learning and Development team to agree a schedule of courses across 5 cohorts.

The programs included:

  • An overview session for all participants.
  • An all-in-one package providing both training and examination vouchers.
  • A combination of both in-person delivery and live-online sessions
  • Mock exams to validate learning
  • Supported by online materials
  • Feedback and adjustments between cohorts to adapt the delivery based on participant preferences.

The program provided approximately 80 participants with the opportunity to:

  • Connect with peers locally
  • Gain certification
